Mission
PA Council for History Education (PCHE) is organized and maintained to:
- Encourage and support the development and implementation of meaningful and effective History curriculum and instruction;
- Advocate and advance the study and teaching of History in schools throughout the state;
- Provide a program of professional activities for History educators and students;
- Provide for educational and professional interaction among History educators.
Background
PA Council for History Education, with the assistance of the National Council for History Education (NCHE) was launched in 2005 by a volunteer Board made up of K-12 educators, college professors, and a n0n-profit professional. The organization incorporated, obtained 501(c)3 non-profit charitable status and held its first annual conference at the Senator John Heinz History Center, Pittsburgh, PA in October 2005. A tradition was born and the day-long teacher's conferences continue each year. Held on Columbus Day in October, educators hear from outstanding keynote speakers, participate in breakout sessions, and come away with new ideas and resources. Also, PCHE has been approved by the PA Department of Education to award Act 48 credits. The PA Council is independent of the National Council, although the two organizations work closely together, and NCHE keeps in contact with PCHE through a PA State Liaison appointee. Recently, the Board took action to appoint a PA State Coordinator to oversee membership recruitment, conference planning, and grant writing.

Membership
The tradition has been that if you attend a conference you are a member of PCHE. However, in an attempt to expand PCHE outreach beyond the southwestern PA region, the Board will be looking at ways to enhance membership by providing additional benefits beyond the annual conference. Stay tuned for more details.
